(3) _______________ trees have roots that grow underground, but not all. One example (4) _______________ mangrove trees. (5) _______________ trees have roots that grow underwater. Most trees live for several hundred years. However, some (6) _______________ much longer. One example is 'Old Tjikko'. (7) _______________ tree, a Norwegian spruce growing in Sweden, (8) _______________ discovered in 2004 by Professor Kullman. Using a special technique, Professor Kullman estimated that the tree is approximately 9,500 years old. Climate change, a complex and urgent global issue, has garnered increasing attention as its impacts reverberate across the planet. The phenomenon is marked by a gradual rise in global temperatures, resulting in a cascade of environmental consequences. From extreme weather events like hurricanes and heatwaves to the melting of polar ice caps and glaciers, the implications of climate change are far-reaching and touch every corner of the Earth.

The warming of our planet is intrinsically linked to the increase in greenhouse gas emissions, primarily carbon dioxide, methane, and nitrous oxide. These gases trap heat in the Earth's atmosphere, creating a greenhouse effect that intensifies the natural warming of the planet. Human activities, such as burning fossil fuels for energy, deforestation, and industrial processes, significantly contribute to these emissions, exacerbating the problem.

One visible manifestation of climate change is the rising sea levels, primarily driven by the melting of ice caps and glaciers. This poses a direct threat to coastal regions, where millions of people reside. Low-lying islands face the risk of submersion, and coastal communities grapple with the reality of increased flooding and erosion. The impacts extend beyond human settlements, affecting marine ecosystems and biodiversity in coastal areas.

The intricate web of life on land is also under siege. Changing climate patterns disrupt ecosystems, influencing the behaviour and distribution of plant and animal species. Some species, unable to adapt quickly enough, face the risk of population decline and potential extinction. This loss of biodiversity not only diminishes the richness of our natural world but also jeopardizes the stability and resilience of ecosystems that provide essential services, such as pollination, water purification, and climate regulation.

Mitigating the impacts of climate change requires a multifaceted approach. Transitioning from fossil fuels to renewable energy sources, such as solar and wind power, is a pivotal step in reducing carbon emissions. Sustainable land-use practices, including reforestation, responsible agriculture, and conservation efforts, contribute to ecosystem preservation. However, the scope and urgency of the issue demand coordinated global action.

International cooperation is crucial to addressing the root causes of climate change and implementing effective solutions. Agreements like the Paris Agreement aim to unite nations in their commitment to reducing emissions and limiting global temperature rise. The challenges posed by climate change are inherently interconnected, transcending national borders, and necessitate a collective effort to secure a sustainable and resilient future for our planet.
