Questions 1-6

The Cullinan rough diamond was found in South Africa in 1905. One of the largest rough diamonds ever found and weighing over 600 grams, it was decided that the British king, Edward VII, should have it. Plans were made to send it from South Africa to the United Kingdom. To keep it safe, policemen from the U.K. arrived in South Africa and travelled on the boat that was supposed to be transporting the diamond to the U.K. In fact, this was a trick to fool criminals who might want to steal it: the diamond wasn't there. Instead, it had been sent by post in an ordinary box. After the diamond reached Europe safely, it was divided into nine major parts and then polished. One of those diamonds, the Great Star of Africa, was given to the British king, Edward VII.

Questions 7-12

One of the best-loved historical writers in English is Patrick O'Brian. O'Brian wrote a total of twenty complete books (and one unfinished one) about the adventures of two characters, an English sea captain called Jack Aubrey and an Irish-Catalan doctor called Stephen Maturin, who was also a secret agent for the British government. Published in 1969, the first book in the series was called Master and Commander. In the book, which is set in 1800, Jack arrives in Minorca, Spain. Stephen is already there. The men meet for the first time at a concert on the island. During it, they argue and even think about fighting. However, when Jack meets Stephen the next day, he is feeling happy. He forgets about their disagreement and invites Stephen to lunch. Afterwards, they discover a shared interest: both love music. Specifically, Jack loves to play the violin and Stephen loves the cello. They play together; then Jack asks Stephen to be the doctor on his new ship and Stephen accepts.
