The Story of Joan of Arc

Joan of Arc was born around 1412 in Domrémy, a small village in northeastern France. She was a peasant girl who became one of the most famous figures in French history. At the age of 13, Joan began to experience visions and hear voices, which she believed were from saints such as Saint Michael, Saint Catherine, and Saint Margaret. These voices told her that she had a divine mission: to drive the English out of France and help Charles VII become the rightful king of France.

At the age of 17, Joan left her home and traveled to meet the Dauphin, Charles VII, who was the heir to the French throne. She convinced him that she had been sent by God to help him reclaim his kingdom. Charles, impressed by her determination and belief, allowed her to lead an army. Joan’s presence inspired the French troops, and she played a key role in lifting the siege of Orléans in 1429, a pivotal moment in the Hundred Years' War.

After her success at Orléans, Joan continued to support Charles VII and helped him secure his coronation as King of France in Reims. However, in 1430, she was captured by the Burgundians, allies of the English, during a military campaign. She was handed over to the English, who put her on trial for charges of heresy, witchcraft, and dressing like a man. Joan was found guilty and sentenced to death. On May 30, 1431, she was burned at the stake in Rouen, France, at the age of 19.

Joan of Arc became a symbol of French unity and patriotism. In 1920, she was canonized as a saint by the Catholic Church, and she remains one of the most admired figures in history.
