If you are going to London on holiday, one of the best places to visit is the Royal Botanic Gardens at Kew, or as most people call it, Kew Gardens. Kew Gardens is situated in south-west London. Begun in 1840, it now employs a total of 800 people, most of whom are scientists and gardeners. The gardens even have their own special police force called the Kew Constabulary. Established in 1845, it eventually helped to provide jobs for soldiers returning from the Second Boer War in 1902. Unlike the police in the rest of the United Kingdom, its power is limited to Kew Gardens. Every year, approximately one million people pay to enter the gardens. They come to see its 40 historic buildings, 30,000 different plants, and 750,000 books about plants. These make Kew Gardens an important tourist attraction and a center for international research.

Most of the flowers in Kew Gardens bloom in summer, so they look wonderful at this time. As a result, summer is usually the busiest time of the year. If you want to avoid the crowds, you should visit in April. It is quieter and there are still lots of things to see. Here are four of the best places to visit in spring

THE WOODLAND GARDENS The Woodland Gardens are near Victoria Gate, which is one of the main entrances to Kew Gardens. In the Woodland Garden, you can see snowdrops and daffodils. Snowdrops, as the name suggests, are small, white flowers. Another spring flower are daffodils, which have bright, yellow flowers. They are also the national flower of Wales.

THE AZALEA GARDEN Some of the most colourful flowers that you can see at this time of the year are the Japanese and American azalea. Most azalea are shade tolerant which means they prefer to live below trees more than in the Sun. The plants in the Azalea Garden, which is in the middle of Kew Gardens, date from 1820. Azaleas are very attractive. 1. _____ they are also harmful to humans. Their honey is called ‘mad honey’ because the honey’s toxins, or poisons, can cause illness.

THE DAVIES ALPINE HOUSE Alpine flowers are plants that grow in mountainous areas. They are considered tough because they can deal with difficult conditions such as cold temperatures, limited water, and strong winds. The Davies Alpine House, which was completed in 2006, is next to the Rock Garden. It houses one of the most beautiful alpine flowers that you can see in April. It is called the Chilean blue crocus. Its natural home is in South America on the Andes mountains at 3,000 metres.

WATERLILY HOUSE Built in 1852, Waterlily House, which is open in April, is the hottest and most humid greenhouse at Kew Gardens. Although the giant Victoria Cruziana waterlily, whose leaves are often 2 metres wide, does not fully bloom until May or June, there are still plenty of other flowers in spring to see.

After walking around, visitors can eat and drink at a number of locations in Kew Gardens. One of them is Victoria Plaza Café, which offers freshly prepared coffee. If you want to have hot food and sit in a historic building, you should try the Orangery Restaurant. If the weather is good, the Pavilion Restaurant has a barbecue on Saturdays and Sundays
